Best link shortener for SMS and WhatsApp
A text message gives you 160 characters and no second chance. Carriers filter messages with shortener domains they associate with spam, and WhatsApp shows the domain prominently in the preview. The tool you pick decides whether the message arrives and whether it looks legitimate.
Carrier filtering of shortener domains
Mobile carriers in the US, UK and much of Europe run content filters on application-to-person traffic. Public shortener domains are among the most common filter triggers, because scammers use them to hide destinations. Messages containing those domains may be silently dropped. Several carriers and messaging providers now recommend branded short domains outright.
That rules out the free tiers of Bitly and TinyURL for any serious SMS campaign, since neither includes a custom domain. It leaves tools that give you a domain free: ReSlug, Short.io, Dub, Cuttly and Linkly.
Characters and domain length
A branded link is only as short as the domain. go.yourbrand.com/sale is 21 characters. A dedicated two-syllable domain on a short extension can get under 15. Pick the domain before the tool, and keep back-halves to one word. Every tool here lets you set a custom back-half; Bitly limits them to three a month on free.
Avoid tracking parameters in the visible URL. Put UTM tags on the destination inside the shortener so the text stays short.

WhatsApp specifics
WhatsApp renders a preview card with the domain name visible. Recipients decide whether to tap based on that domain. A branded one earns the tap; a random shortener domain looks like a phishing attempt. WhatsApp also fetches the link to draw the card, which registers as a click unless filtered. ReSlug removes those fetches from analytics automatically.
For WhatsApp Business broadcasts, where a template may be sent to thousands of numbers, make sure the tool keeps redirecting past its tracked-click cap. Linkly pauses links at 500 clicks/mo on free, which would break a broadcast mid-send.
Checklist before you send
- Branded domain connected, SSL active.
- Back-half is one short word, no parameters visible.
- Destination is mobile-friendly; most SMS taps happen on a phone.
- Link still redirects if you hit a plan cap.
- Test the message on two carriers before the full send.
Questions & answers
Why are my text messages with short links not arriving?
Carriers filter messages containing public shortener domains associated with spam. Move to a short link on a domain you own.
What is the shortest branded link I can make?
It depends on the domain. A short dedicated domain plus a one-word back-half can be under 15 characters. The tool adds nothing to the length.
Which free link shortener works for SMS?
ReSlug, with a free custom domain and no ads. Short.io and Cuttly also include a free domain.
Does WhatsApp count as a click when it shows a preview?
The preview fetch hits your link. Tools without bot filtering record it as a click. ReSlug filters it on every plan.
