Best link shortener for social media

Social links live in three places: the post, the bio, and the preview card the platform draws. A good shortener controls all three. A bad one gets your post throttled or shows a Bitly ad to your followers.

Pick. ReSlug for most accounts: a custom domain, 500 active links, a link-in-bio page and custom social previews, with no ads, and a $9 Pro plan for routing by device. Short.io if you manage several brands and need five domains free. Avoid Bitly's free plan, which shows ads and gives five links a month.

What social platforms punish

Three things go wrong with short links on social media.

  1. Generic shortener domains get throttled. Platforms track which domains attract spam reports. The big public shorteners carry that history. A domain only you use starts clean.
  2. Previews are drawn from the destination, not the short link. If the destination page has a weak title or image, the card looks weak. Tools that let you override the preview title, description and image per link fix this without touching the destination site.
  3. The bio allows one link. Instagram and TikTok give you one URL. A bio page turns it into several, and the shortener's analytics tell you which one people tap.

So the shortlist for social is: custom domain, editable previews, bio page, no ads, and analytics that separate real taps from the platform's own crawler hitting the link.

Why ReSlug is the pick

ReSlug's free plan already includes the social essentials: one custom domain with SSL, 500 active links, a bio page and 30 days of analytics with bot traffic removed. That last point matters more on social than anywhere else, because every platform fetches your link to build a preview, and each fetch looks like a click to a naive counter.

Pro, at $9 a month or $79 a year, adds the features social managers actually use: custom link previews per link, device routing so an iPhone user lands on the App Store and an Android user on Google Play, scheduled destination changes for a launch window, five bio pages with ReSlug branding removed, and branded QR codes for stories. There is no team seat model yet, which is the honest limitation for agencies.

When to pick something else

A setup that works on every platform

  1. Register a short domain or use a subdomain of your main site, such as go.yourbrand.com.
  2. Connect it to the shortener and wait for SSL to issue. Platforms warn on plain HTTP links.
  3. Create one bio page and put the branded short link to it in every profile.
  4. For each campaign link, set the preview title and image so the card looks intentional.
  5. Add UTM parameters once in the shortener, not in every post, so analytics stay consistent.

Questions & answers

Does Instagram block short links?

Instagram allows links in bios and stories but applies spam heuristics to domains. Well-known public shortener domains attract more scrutiny than a domain only you use. A branded short domain is the safest choice.

Which link shortener has a free link-in-bio page?

ReSlug (1 page), Cuttly (1 page (5 links)) and Rebrandly (1 gallery, watermarked) include a bio page on free plans.

Can I change the preview image of a short link?

On ReSlug Pro and Dub Pro you can set the social card title, description and image per link. Other tools inherit the destination page's tags.

Why does my new link show clicks before I shared it?

Platforms and messaging apps fetch links to render previews. Those fetches count as clicks unless the shortener filters bots. ReSlug filters them on every plan; Linkly from Starter; Cuttly shows a bot chart from Single.
